Let us introduce ourselves
About Neil
When I say introduce ‘ourselves’ I am primarily using the royal ‘we’, i.e. whenever possible I will take you out on your tour. I know East Sussex/south west Kent intimately, like the back of my hand. I was brought up in the heart of this beautiful area – in the grounds of my prep school Ardingly College (see the photo below). I spent my first seventeen years there and I’ve been living back in the area again for the past fifteen years. As well as Ardingly, I’ve lived in Forest Row, Lewes, Brighton and St Leonards (the second photo below is taken from my flat there), and in two or three cottages in the middle of the countryside.
My guiding style is personal and includes a broad and engaging history of the area and the attractions we’ll visit, spontaneous asides, and various bits and pieces of eclectic information I’ve gleaned over the years. I am also very able to adapt and improvise your tour if you decide in the moment, for example, that you want to visit a lovely country pub or an rural tea room or find a shop selling…er, well whatever it is you want. I don’t have formal guide qualifications so if you want a tour where the information is academic and extremely in-depth and specialist then I may not be for you, but if you want an an informative and entertaining day out enjoying beautiful countryside, ancient villages, wonderful historical sites, good company (I’ll do my best!), and the great variety of unique and often breathtaking attractions in the area then I’m your man.
My background is in journalism (I used to write for educational consultancies as well as freelancing for newspapers and magazines) and now I write books – feel, er, very free to buy them, to read and as souvenirs and gifts! – and take people on tours…I hope this will include you. I also work as a Journey Practitioner and a podcast host. You can find more details about me at www.neildelstrother.co.uk
If you are already visiting London then it’s a great idea to spend some time with me touring the nearby Sussex countryside to get a broader perspective of authentic English life. I’ll be delighted and honoured to personally show you around this place I love so much for a day, two days, three days or even longer.
Note that if you arrive on dates where fetes, fairs and other events are held I can easily incorporate them into your schedule in addition to or in place of another activity. The tour is private so you can chose activities according to your taste. If the weather is particularly beautiful, or indeed particularly awful, we can make changes to your programme. And if you are coming with children then I am very happy to advise you on activities that best suits their tastes.
